Google may have leaked the design and details of its latest foldable smartphone about a month ago, but it has now been officially unveiled after Made by Google 2024. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is here, and it looks better than Google’s first attempt at a foldable smartphone.

The phone isn’t due to ship until September 4, but you can already preorder it from the Google Store, Best Buy, and Amazon for $1,799. Mashable’s Alex Perry got hands-on with the Pro Fold ahead of launch, and his first impressions show that Google has “improved the device in almost every way” from last year’s Pixel Fold.

So what’s different? Besides folding the phone into the Pixel 9 series, Google updated some key design features. First, the phone is thinner, which isn’t a given for a device with an internal and external display. Google slimmed down the Pixel 9 Pro Fold but increased the size of the displays. The 2023 Pixel Fold had a 5.8-inch external display and a 7.6-inch internal display. In comparison, the 9 Pro Fold has a 6.3-inch external display and an 8-inch internal display, with 2,700 nits of peak brightness, a 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate, a 2076 x 2152 resolution, and narrower bezels than its predecessor.

That means a phone that feels less cramped and clunky when unfolded, and lighter than the original Pixel Fold. In other words, an innovative design that’s more practical.

Of course, these design upgrades wouldn’t mean much without the software to support them. The 16GB of RAM and Tensor G4 chip help power a host of Gemini AI features, plus they help make the most of the larger screen space. For example, when using the internal display, you can run up to four different video streams on each quadrant of the display. Or, if that seems a bit too exciting, you can have text open right next to the YouTube video you’re watching. Other features combine the foldable external display with AI, including a new “Made You Look” feature designed to grab your little one’s attention and help you get the perfect shot.

If you’re prepared to shell out at least $1,799 for the foldable smartphone, Google’s upgrade means you can get it in Obsidian or Porcelain colors and with either 256GB or 512GB of storage.
